Uses:
Treatment of hypertension (especially in pregnancy)
Dosage:
Adults: Initially 250 mg 2–3 times daily; maintenance 500 mg–2 g/day in divided doses (max 3 g/day)
Children: 10 mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses; adjust as needed (max 65 mg/kg/day or 3 g/day)
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue
Dry mouth, headache
Postural hypotension
Liver dysfunction (rare), haemolytic anaemia (rare)
Warnings & Precautions:
Monitor liver function and blood counts
May cause sedation — caution with driving
Use cautiously in liver disease or history of depression
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Commonly used and generally considered safe in pregnancy
Small amounts in breast milk — usually compatible with breastfeeding
Drug Interactions:
Other antihypertensives (additive effect)
Iron supplements (reduce absorption)
MAO inhibitors and CNS depressants (enhanced effects)
Contraindications:
Active liver disease or previous methyldopa-induced liver disorder
Haemolytic anaemia
Hypersensitivity to methyldopa
