Uses:

Symptomatic relief of acid-related conditions, including:

  • Heartburn/acid indigestion.
  • Acid reflux/gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) symptoms.
  • Upset stomach, sour stomach, or hyperacidity.
  • Dyspepsia/indigestion associated with excess gastric acid.
  • Adjunctive support in peptic ulcer disease or gastritis (not curative—does not heal ulcers but relieves symptoms).
Provides rapid, temporary neutralization of stomach acid; may coat mucosa mildly for soothing effect. Not for long-term use or underlying causes (e.g., H. pylori infection—requires antibiotics/PPI).

Dosage:

Take orally, preferably after meals and at bedtime or as needed (shake suspension; chew tablets if applicable).
Adults/children >12 years (typical for suspension): 10–20 mL (2–4 teaspoonfuls/5 mL spoonfuls) 3–4 times daily or as required (e.g., after meals and bedtime).
Children 5–12 years: 5–10 mL (1–2 teaspoonfuls) 3 times daily or as required (consult pharmacist/doctor).
Tablets (if chewable form): 1–2 tablets 3–4 times daily or as directed.
Duration: Short-term/as needed (e.g., days to weeks); do not exceed recommended without advice. Take in a little water if needed; avoid high doses in renal impairment.

Side Effects:

Common (dose-related, often mild): Constipation (from aluminium), diarrhea/loose stools (from magnesium—balanced in combo), chalky taste, nausea, abdominal cramps/discomfort, bloating.
Less common: Headache, dry mouth, altered taste.
Serious (rare, with prolonged/high doses): Hyper magnesemia (high magnesium—symptoms: flushing, drowsiness, low BP, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat—higher risk in renal impairment); phosphate depletion/osteomalacia (bone softening from aluminium binding phosphate); electrolyte imbalances; allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling).

Warnings & Precautions:

Use caution in renal impairment (risk of magnesium accumulation/hyper magnesemia) or severe constipation/diarrhea.
Prolonged use may cause phosphate/calcium imbalance or rebound acid hypersecretion—limit to short-term.
Not for self-treatment if symptoms persist >2 weeks, recur frequently, include weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, or difficulty swallowing (may indicate serious issue—seek doctor).
Shake well; may contain sorbitol/excipients (laxative effect or allergy risk).
Monitor in elderly or those on low-phosphate diets.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: Generally considered low risk for short-term use (no formal category, but widely used); aluminium/magnesium poorly absorbed—use only if benefit outweighs risk; consult doctor (avoid high/prolonged doses).
Lactation: Minimal excretion in breast milk; generally compatible for occasional use—consult provider.

Drug Interactions:

Reduces absorption of many drugs—separate dosing by 1–2 hours: tetracyclines, quinolones (antibiotics), iron supplements, digoxin, levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, fluoroquinolones, penicillamine, or sucralfate.
May affect ketoconazole/itraconazole (reduced efficacy).
Avoid with citrate-containing products (increases aluminium absorption)

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium trisilicate, or excipients.
Severe renal impairment (risk of hyper magnesemia/hypermagnesemia).
Intestinal obstruction, severe constipation, or undiagnosed GI bleeding.
Hypophosphatemia or conditions worsened by magnesium/aluminium
