Dosage:

Adults:

  • Osteoarthritis: 200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: 100–200 mg twice daily

  • Acute pain / dysmenorrhea: 400 mg initially, followed by 200 mg if needed on the first day, then 200 mg twice daily if required

Take with or without food as directed by a doctor.

Side Effects:

Common:

  • Stomach pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Headache

  • Indigestion

Less common:

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Hypertension

  • Peripheral edema

Serious (rare):

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Cardiovascular events (heart attack or stroke)

  • Severe allergic reactions

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Use cautiously in patients with cardiovascular disease.

  • May increase risk of heart attack or stroke with long-term use.

  • Use carefully in kidney or liver impairment.

  • Avoid in patients with sulfonamide allergy.

  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • First and Second Trimester: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.

  • Third Trimester: Contraindicated

    • Celecoxib may cause premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus.

    • It may also lead to delayed labour and increased bleeding risk.

Use in Lactation

  • Celecoxib passes into breast milk in small amounts.

  • Use with caution during breastfeeding and only on medical advice.

Drug Interactions:

  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) – increased bleeding risk

  • ACE inhibitors and diuretics – reduced antihypertensive effect

  • Lithium – increased lithium levels

  • Other NSAIDs – increased GI toxicity

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to celecoxib or sulfonamides

  • History of asthma or allergic reactions to NSAIDs

  • Peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Severe heart failure

  • Late pregnancy (third trimester)
