Uses:
- Short-term relief of constipation
- Bowel evacuation before surgery or diagnostic procedures
- Management of neurogenic bowel dysfunction
Dosage:
Adults and children ≥12 years:
- 5–10 mg once daily at bedtime
Children 6–11 years:
- 5 mg once daily
Children <6 years:
- Use only under medical supervision
Note: Tablets should be swallowed whole (do not crush or chew).
Side Effects:
Common:
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
Less common:
- Dizziness
- Rectal irritation (more with suppositories)
Serious:
- Electrolyte imbalance (especially with prolonged use)
- Severe dehydration
Warnings & Precautions:
- Avoid long-term use (may cause dependence)
- Use with caution in dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
- Do not take within 1 hour of milk or antacids (may damage coating)
- Not recommended in intestinal obstruction or acute abdomen
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Generally considered safe in pregnancy when used short-term
- Minimal systemic absorption; compatible with breastfeeding
Drug Interactions:
- Antacids and milk: reduce effectiveness of enteric coating
- Diuretics or corticosteroids: increased risk of electrolyte imbalance
- Other laxatives: may increase risk of dehydration
Contraindications:
- Intestinal obstruction
- Acute surgical abdomen (e.g. appendicitis)
- Severe dehydration
- Known hypersensitivity to bisacodyl
