Uses:

Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia (especially when associated with nutritional gaps, poor appetite, or increased needs); Supportive nutritional therapy in:

  • Convalescence/recovery from illness or surgery.
  • Pregnancy/lactation (under medical advice for anemia prophylaxis).
  • Growing children or adolescents with poor diet.
  • Conditions with increased iron/vitamin requirements (e.g., blood loss, malabsorption).
The added amino acids (histidine, lysine) aid protein synthesis and iron utilization; B-vitamins support energy, nerve function, and red blood cell production. Not for non-iron-related anemias or as sole treatment for severe cases—requires medical evaluation.

Dosage:

Taken orally, preferably with or after meals to reduce GI upset (though some iron forms are better absorbed on empty stomach—follow label/doctor). Typical (adult/older children):

  • 5–10 mL (one teaspoon to tablespoon) once or twice daily (provides ~275–550 mg ferrous glycine sulphate equivalent per dose, delivering bioavailable iron).
Children: Lower dose (e.g., 2.5–5 mL once daily) based on age/weight—consult pediatrician.
Pregnant women: Often 5–10 mL daily as prophylaxis (per doctor).
Duration: Usually 3–6 months for anemia correction (or until hemoglobin normalizes), with follow-up blood tests. Do not exceed recommended without advice; adjust in renal/hepatic impairment.

Side Effects:

Common (often dose-related, GI): Dark stools (harmless, from iron), constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/discomfort, diarrhea, metallic taste, appetite changes.
Less common: Staining of teeth (dilute and rinse mouth after), mild allergic reactions (rash).
Serious (rare): Iron overload (if overused, especially in hemochromatosis), severe GI bleeding/irritation, hypersensitivity (swelling, breathing issues—seek immediate care).

Warnings & Precautions:

Use only if iron deficiency confirmed (e.g., via blood tests)—avoid in iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis, thalassemia).
Monitor for constipation—increase fluids/fiber or use stool softener if needed.
Dental hygiene important (rinse after dose).
Seek doctor if no improvement after 4 weeks, black/tarry stools (possible bleeding), or severe GI symptoms.
Not for self-treatment of undiagnosed anemia.
Store at room temperature, away from light/children.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: Ferrous glycine sulphate is a well-tolerated iron form; widely used for anemia prevention/treatment in pregnancy (former Category A/B equivalent for iron supplements)—safe when indicated, but consult doctor for dosing.
Lactation: Compatible; iron and vitamins pass minimally into breast milk—generally safe, but monitor infant and consult provider.

Drug Interactions:

Antacids, calcium supplements, tea/coffee/dairy: Reduce iron absorption—separate by 2 hours.
Tetracyclines, quinolones (antibiotics): Reduced efficacy—space dosing.
Levodopa, methyldopa: Possible reduced absorption.
Vitamin C: May enhance iron absorption (beneficial if co-formulated, but not here).

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to any component (e.g., iron, vitamins, or excipients).
Iron overload disorders (hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis).
Hemolytic anemias without iron deficiency.
Peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease (if active GI irritation risk—relative).
