Uses:

Treatment of fungal infections of the eye and surrounding structures caused by susceptible fungi, including:

  • Fungal conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • Fungal keratitis (corneal fungal infection/ulcer).
  • Blepharitis or other external ocular fungal infections (e.g., from Candida, Aspergillus, or dermatophytes).
Relieves symptoms like redness, itching, discharge, pain, swelling, or blurred vision from fungal causes. Not effective against bacterial, viral (e.g., herpes), or allergic eye conditions—use only for confirmed/suspected fungal infections (often requires culture confirmation in severe cases like keratitis).

Dosage:

Instill into affected eye(s) only; wash hands first; tilt head back, pull lower lid down, instill drops without touching eye. Blink gently; close eye 1–2 minutes (press inner corner to reduce drainage). Typical (follow label/doctor exactly):
Adults and children (if advised): 1–2 drops in affected eye(s) 3–4 times daily (or as directed; may increase frequency in severe infections like keratitis).
Duration: Usually 7–14 days or longer (e.g., 2–4 weeks for keratitis); complete full course even if symptoms improve to prevent recurrence/resistance.
Children: Not routinely recommended without specialist advice (limited pediatric data).
If using other eye drops, wait 5–10 minutes between applications. For contact lens wearers: Remove lenses before use; wait 15 minutes after to reinsert (may discolor lenses).

Side Effects:

Common (mild/transient): Burning/stinging/irritation upon instillation, temporary blurred vision, redness, itching, dryness, or discomfort.
Less common: Headache, eye swelling/puffiness, increased tearing, foreign body sensation.
Serious (rare, seek immediate care): Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling around eyes/face, breathing difficulty), worsening pain/redness/discharge/vision changes (may indicate resistance or progression), corneal toxicity/ulceration, or signs of systemic absorption (unlikely with topical use).

Warnings & Precautions:

For ocular use only—do not ingest/inject.
Remove soft contact lenses before use (wait 15 minutes after; may discolor lenses).
If no improvement after 3–5 days or symptoms worsen (e.g., severe pain, vision loss, increased discharge), seek ophthalmologist urgently (may need culture/sensitivity testing or alternative therapy).
Avoid in viral/fungal-non-susceptible or non-infectious eye conditions without medical advice.
Use caution in pregnancy/breastfeeding (limited data—low systemic absorption but consult doctor).
Discard bottle 4 weeks after opening (contamination risk).
Overuse/resistance: Do not use for non-fungal conditions.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: Limited human data; animal studies show no major risks at therapeutic doses—use only if clearly needed (low systemic absorption); consult doctor.
Lactation: Minimal excretion in breast milk expected—generally compatible short-term; consult provider.

Drug Interactions:

Minimal significant (topical/low systemic absorption).
No major known interactions with other eye drops—separate by 5–10 minutes if using multiple products.

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to econazole, other imidazoles (e.g., miconazole, clotrimazole), or any excipient (e.g., preservatives like benzalkonium chloride).
Not for non-fungal eye conditions without medical advice.
