Dosage:
One tablet twice daily
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, insomnia, dizziness, vertigo, ataxia and mental confusion and hypersensitivity reactions. Leucopenia has also been occasionally reported.
Warnings & Precautions:
Paediatric use – although many authors suggest contraindication for the use of fluoroquinolones in children, in the light of clinical experiences others recommend a cautious use of these drugs as and when necessary in children.
CNS stimulation – ofloxacin can cause CNS stimulation and therefore the drug should be avoided in CNS disorders like epilepsy and cerebral arteriosclerosis.
Renal or hepatic impairment – administer with caution.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: should not be used in pregnancy.
Nursing mothers: no adequate trial are available to suggest the administration of either drug during breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions:
Concomitant administration of oral anticoagulants may increase the risk of haemorrhage due to diminished hepatic metabolism. Antacids reduce the absorption of ofloxacin. As with other nitroimidazoles. Ornidazole may invoke a disulfiram-like reaction in some patients.
