Presentation
Mediven cream is a white , opaque, homogenous mass containing Betamethasone Valerate BP equivalent to Betamethasone 0.1% w/w. Mediven ointment is a white , translucent, homogenous mass containing Betamethasone Valerate BP equivalent to Betamethasone 0.1% w/w.
Pharmacological actions
Betamethasone is a glucocorticoid which acts by controlling the rate of synthesis of proteins.

Uses:
Inflammatory dermatoses that are normally responsive to topical corticosteroid therapy and is often effective in the less responsive conditions such as psoriasis.
Indicated specially for eczema, psoriasis, lichen simplex, lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis, contact sensitivity reactions and may be used as an adjunct to systemic steroid therapy in generalized erythroderma.
Dosage:
A small quantity of mediven should be applied to the affected area two to three times daily until improvement occurs. Mediven should be rubbed in gently. Frequency of application may then be reduced to once a day, or even less often.
If no improvement is seen within 2-4 weeks, re-assessment of the diagnosis may be necessary.
Side Effects:
Prolonged use may cause atrophic changes in skin. Prolonged use of large amount on extensive area may result in systemic absorption mainly in infants and children.
Pigmentation changes and hypertrichosis.
Warnings & Precautions:
Prolonged therapy should be avoided, especially in infants and children. It should be applied sparingly to the affected area only.
On prolonged treatment it may exhibit, atrophic changes especially on face, apart from other body parts, which must be borne in mind. If applied on eyelids care should be taken that preparation does not enter the eye

Contraindications:
Rosacea, acne vulgaris, peri-oral dermatitis, primary cutaneous viral infections, skin lesions caused by infection with fungi or bacteria primary or secondary infections due to yeast, peri-anal and genital pruritus.
