Ambroxol hydrochloride B.P 15mg/5ml
Class: Mucolytic / Expectorant
Manufacturer: Square Pharmaceuticals Limited
Dosage Form: Syrup
Similar Brands: Ambrox Syrup 100ml
Uses:
Secretolytic (mucolytic) therapy in acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport, such as:
- Acute/chronic bronchitis.
- Bronchiectasis.
- Bronchial asthma with viscous sputum.
- Productive cough with difficult-to-expectorate phlegm (e.g., in common cold, flu, pneumonia, or COPD exacerbations).
Helps thin thick mucus, ease coughing, and improve breathing by promoting clearance. Not for dry coughs or as primary treatment for underlying infection (often combined with antibiotics if bacterial).
Dosage:
Taken orally, with or without food (often with to reduce GI upset). Use measuring device; typical ambroxol equivalent dosing (adjust per strength and age):
Adults and children >12 years (30 mg/5 mL common): 10 mL (30 mg) 3 times daily for first 2–3 days, then 10 mL twice daily (or 5 mL 3 times daily maintenance).
Children 6–12 years: 5 mL (15–30 mg, depending on strength) 2–3 times daily.
Children 2–5 years: 2.5–5 mL (7.5–15 mg) 2–3 times daily (often lower strength preferred).
Children <2 years: On medical advice only (e.g., 1.25–2.5 mL twice daily).

Common (mild, often transient): Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia), taste changes, dry mouth/throat.
Less common: Headache, dizziness, rash, pruritus, dysuria.

Warnings & Precautions:
Consult doctor before use in severe renal/hepatic impairment (dose adjustment needed).
Use caution in patients with gastric ulcers or history of peptic ulcer (relative caution).
Monitor for allergic reactions—discontinue if rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty occurs.
Not for dry/irritative coughs (may worsen); combine with adequate fluid intake to aid mucus clearance.
Seek medical help if symptoms persist/worsen after 4–5 days, or if fever, shortness of breath, or bloody sputum.
Contains excipients like sorbitol (may cause diarrhea in high doses) or benzoic acid (allergy risk).

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Ambroxol crosses the placenta; preclinical studies show no major harm, but avoid especially in first trimester; use only if benefit outweighs risk (consult doctor—generally low risk in later trimesters).
Lactation: Excreted in breast milk (low amounts); generally considered compatible, but monitor infant for GI effects or rash—consult provider.

Drug Interactions:
Minimal significant interactions.
May enhance antibiotic penetration into lung tissue (beneficial when co-prescribed, e.g., with amoxicillin).
No major CYP450 issues; avoid combining with cough suppressants (e.g., codeine) as they counteract expectorant action.
